What is an HDTV tuner?
The abbreviation SDTV stands for Standard Definition Television that was particularly used in Televisions or set top box since 1997. A Standard Definition Television Tuner is a device to access different channels. Standard Definition is a digital network for televisions lacking High Definition visuals.
SDTV displays the picture quality that has a resolution of 480i, while an HDTV tuner has a high picture resolution of 1080p. Moreover a middle-resolution picture tuner has two digital network tuners, i.e., EDTV, providing a resolution between 680p and 720p.
The televisions produced since 1997 have a SDTV tuner. Though the SDTV tuner is the most basic model of the tuner that is now replaced with HDTV tuners. TV manufacturers in India were well aware of this fact that even though SDTV has features that give picture resolutions in HD but the picture quality displayed will be blurred and weak.
Though the SDTV tuner provides the same picture quality as that of analog Television it proved inadequate for broadcasters coming up with ATSC tuner and HD picture Quality.
What is the difference between SDTV and HDTV?
Standard definition (SDTV) has a resolution of 480i or 480p, and pixels are arranged 640 x 480 while HDTV has much better resolution of 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. HDTV tuner enables your Smart LED TV(YUWA) to display images in HD resolution.
Nowadays, many TVs in the market are devoid of an inbuilt tuner due to their flat model designs. Slim designed TV models being a direct result of the missing tuner space that gives TV an ultra slim design.
So, for the viewer who wishes to watch any live broadcast on television needs to get a top peripheral tuner that generally features and has both SD and HD capability. In some cases, SDTV tuners may also need to have either an antenna or a cable.
There are various standards for resolving picture quality in different continents, such as North America has set SDTV tuner resolution at 480i. This means that the Television renders the picture quality at 480 interlaced lines in a vertical frame. The European standard for resolution is 525, of which 480 are those lines that show signal information.
Though SDTV tuner facilitates the image to be displayed in a 4:3 display ratio which also means that the width of the picture is comparatively more prominent than the height of the film. However, HDTV tuners the image with the 16:9 display ratio.
On the other hand, set-top boxes allow the user to take the SD 4:3 ratio to cover the HDTV 16:9 ratio on the full screen. This extension of the ratio generally leads to poor picture resolution, and hence it cannot be called a substitute for HDTV in any terms.
